The wet weather had left the Penlan pitch wet and muddy in places for their home game again Cwmavon on Saturday.  The rain held off until the later stages of the game with a slight gusting wind throughout.  Referee Mr. Andrew Moule from Port Talbot got the game underway with Penlan making the kick-off.

The game was a contest between the two clubs lying in bottom table place and it was Cwmavon that scored first when at 7 minutes they landed a centre field penalty kick.  Just 3 minutes later second row Luke Mooney won the ball from a Cwmavon lineout and progressed play across field to reach Captain Dafydd Pritchard at wing who sprinted over at the corner for a fine try.

Just before the 30 minute mark Cwmavon regained the lead to 5 – 6 from a second penalty kick.  Within 5 minutes Penlan were putting in determined work for the line with some excellent rucking that got the ball to the Cwmavon line until prop, Adam Glover powered over at the corner for Penlan to go back ahead by 10 – 6.

At the half time whistle, Cwmavon narrowed the lead to 10 – 9 with their third successful penalty kick.

It could have gone either way in the second half but some Penlan mis-handling at just 5 minutes in, was seized on by Cwmavon who made a fine dodging run to get through the Penlan defence and land at the corner.  It was a difficult conversion kick which initially hit the far post but bounced through for a 10 – 16 lead for Cwmavon.

The rest of the match was a to and fro affair in the light rain, which failed to afford points for either side.  Penlan had played well but with shortages still having their effect, Cwmavon came out on top and moved to third from bottom.  Penlan had to settle for a losing bonus point and remain in bottom position just one point behind Cwmgors.
