GUTSY WIN FOR PENLAN AWAY AT CWMGORS
.
Saturday 10th. March saw Penlan travel away to Cwmgors for their return fixture. Their main pitch was unplayable so, at the last minute, the game was switched to the nearby Maerdy pitch which, itself was wet and muddy. The game went ahead under the management of referee Simon Beard from Ebbw Vale and fortunately the weather stayed fine but with a cold wind.
First points went to Penlan after scrum-half Bobby Scrine made a fast sprint up the wing and timely passed to No. 8 Neil Draper who sprinted clear to score his second try of the season. Thereafter the teams vied for the upper hand but there was no headway until just before half time when Penlan conceded 3 points from a penalty to give them a slim 3 – 5 lead.
In the second half it was a hard game for both sides in the muddy conditions but Penlan proved to be a match for the heavy home pack. At 10 minutes Penlan advanced their lead to 3 – 8 from a safe penalty kick from Outside-half Scott Davies. At 15 minutes Cwmgors managed to breach the Penlan defence to score a try and even the score at 8 all. A win was crucial for both teams in their battle in 10th and 11th league position but a two point draw looked the likely result until 5 minutes before full-time, Penlan had a penalty kick chance. It was a tall order for Scott Davies but he was up for the task and made a superb kick to secure his side the 8 – 11 win. It meant 4 points for Penlan which advanced them to 9th. league position, with Cwmgors picking up a single losing bonus point.
It was a gutsy win for Penlan which made their position just that little bit safer in a season that has seen them struggling.
The conditions took their toll on other fixtures with Nantyffyllon v Taibach, and Ystradgynlais v Morriston being postponed. Games that also went ahead resulted in –
