Maesteg Celtic v Penlan 16th September 2017

A PROUD AND CREDITABLE DISPLAY BY PENLAN

Despite having player shortages, Penlan put on a good display of rugby away to Maesteg Celtic on Saturday.  There was plenty of rain with distant thunder throughout the game but that did not spoil the good display of rugby by both sides.  Sadly, though, not having an experienced front row, or replacements, meant Penlan had to opt for passive scrums.

Before play started referee Mr Joseff Rees led players and spectators in a minutes silence in respect for the father of Penlan player Ben Evans whose funeral was being held that day.

Early on, both sides sought to weigh up their opponents, with most of the initial play being in the Maesteg half.  Just before 20 minutes Penlan were attacking for the line when Scott Davies took a well aimed goal kick to put Penlan 3 points ahead.  Their lead only lasted 4 minutes until Maesteg landed a solid try between the posts which they converted for 7 – 3.

In the dying minutes of the first half the home side piled on the agony with a penalty and a penalty try on the half time whistle to give them a 17 – 3 lead.

With no replacements available at half time the Penlan side, which was relying on some players that had not played for some time, had to stay on the field despite tiredness and minor injury.  Their loyalty and commitment was greatly appreciated by supporters as they battled on to maintain Penlan’s pride.  At just after 10 minutes a constant Maesteg attack got through the Penlan defence and they landed a corner try which they converted to extend their lead to 24 – 3.

Penlan never gave up their brave performance and continued to put the home side under pressure which paid dividends when at 20 minutes, they won ball from the scrum and quickly crossed field to enable Captain Dafydd Pritchard to sprint over the line for a well deserved try.  Scott Davies converted to make the score 24 – 10.

To their immense credit, Penlan continued to put Maesteg under pressure until at 2 minutes before time Stuart James made an unstoppable attack for the line and went over at the corner to narrow the score to 24 – 15.

Maesteg were stung into action and in the dying seconds put the hard pressed Penlan side under pressure and succeeded in going over for their fourth try.  The conversion failed which left them with a final 29 – 15 win.

The brave display by a disadvantaged Penlan side was greatly appreciated by their supporters who were proud of their spirited display.  The score in last season’s fixture had been a 24 – 10 result which was testament to the fine effort made on this occasion.

Next week Penlan travel back to Maesteg, this time for their away fixture against Nantyffyllon.  In the meantime the club will be doing their best to field the strongest side possible.
